JSC: April 13, 2026
April is moving.
And if you've been heads down since the start of the year, grinding through applications, building your team, or simply trying to stay consistent, this is your reminder to come up for air.
Recharging isn't a detour from the work. It's part of it.
This week, we're bringing a refreshed mindset into what's shaping up to be a pivotal stretch of the month. The conversations are happening. The rooms are filling up. And JSC continues to show up in bigger ways β from the energy at our Hiring Event last week to the ongoing work we're doing as part of the Truist Foundation Fellowship.
There's a lot in motion. Let's get into it.
Mindset Monday: Recharge Is Not Retreat
There's a version of hustle culture that tells you slowing down means falling behind. That rest is a reward you haven't earned yet. That if you're not pushing, someone else is.
We're here to challenge that.
Recharging is not the opposite of progress β it's the foundation of it. The job seekers who burn through every week at full intensity without pausing to reflect, reset, and refuel are often the ones who plateau, lose confidence, or start making decisions from a place of desperation rather than clarity.
The same is true for founders building teams.
This week's message is simple: come back to yourself before you go back to the work.
"Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop." β Ovid
A few things worth sitting with this week:
- Rest restores perspective. When you're exhausted, every rejection feels permanent and every obstacle feels bigger than it is. A refreshed mind sees options where a tired one sees walls.
- Recharging looks different for everyone. It might be a walk, a conversation, a weekend off the job boards, or simply a moment of gratitude for how far you've already come.
- You don't restart from zero. Everything you've built since January (the applications, the conversations, the habits) is still there. You're not starting over. You're stepping back in with more clarity.
This is the middle of April. Q2 is in full swing. And the best thing you can bring to this stretch of the year isn't more effort, it's better energy.
Show up refreshed. The work will meet you there.

Hire South Florida Recap!
We had an amazing time this past week hosting the Hire South Florida event at Miami Dade College's North Campus! Amazing turnout from both job seekers and our employer partners!
Our phenomenal panelists β Hilmon Sorey of The Source, Cindy Roldan Jaramillo of RJFF Consulting, Khambrel (Kham) Ward of BLK Men in Tech, and Tangy F. of Cre8tive Devs Software brought real, honest conversation around hiring, building teams, and creating opportunity in today's market. Our conversation was real, and unfiltered.
Whether you were a founder, hiring leader, or job seeker in the room, there was something powerful in hearing directly from people who are actively doing the work.
A huge thank you to our community partners in COOP Careers, The Urban League of Broward County, Miami Dade College, and Miami Tech Works for bringing this event to life.
Another big thnak you to our incredible sponsors: Northeastern University β Miami, Watson Institute, and Truist Foundation.
The feedback has been wonderful, and our next event is May 7, 2026 at The Urban League of Broward County.
We can't wait to bring you more events like this, stay tuned for updates! π

Truist Foundation Fellowship: Building From the Inside Out
One of the things we appreciate most about the Truist Foundation Fellowship is that it isn't just about scaling a business β it's about building the person behind it.
Over the past few weeks, the fellowship has taken us deep into the fundamentals that separate good operators from great ones: team management, leadership styles, and the core values that anchor every decision you make as a founder. These aren't surface-level conversations. They're the kind of reflections that make you stop and ask β am I building this the right way?
And now, we're putting it all together through the work of pitching our ventures.
Not just pitching for funding or attention but articulating why JSC exists, what we've built, and where we're going with the kind of clarity that only comes after you've done the foundational work first.
That's what the fellowship is designed to do. Strengthen the foundation so everything built on top of it can actually hold.
We're grateful to be in the room and we'll continue to share updates as this journey unfolds.
That's a wrap!
Last week's Hiring Event at MDC North Campus was exactly what this community needed.
The energy in the room said everything. Employers and job seekers showing up with intention, real conversations happening in real time, and a reminder that opportunity still lives in the moments when you choose to be present.
That energy is exactly what we've been talking about this week.
You can have the right resume, the right skills, and the right experience, but if you show up depleted, disconnected, or running on empty, the room will feel it. The people who stood out at the Hiring Event weren't just qualified. They were engaged. Present. Refreshed.
That's the edge.
So as you move into the rest of this week and the weeks ahead, protect your energy like it's part of your strategy, because it is.
Recharge. Refocus. Show up ready.
Weβre here with you.
Tena & Stephen
